You will find hereafter some useful tips on how to properly fill out the different fields of the Prior Notification form. This form is available onwww.carnetatamexico.com.mx/ata.

First of all, it is important to remember that the foreign company entering Mexico - with hand-carried goods must complete the Prior Notification form before arrival. If the foreign company enters Mexico by cargo using the services of a Mexican customs broker, it is the broker's responsibility to complete the form.

  • ATA Carnet number: it is necessary to put the whole number including the country code. For example, the number for Mexico would be: MX 123/45

  • Name of the national guaranteeing organization: the foreign company must indicate the name of the national guaranteeing organization in his/her country. Many countries have several issuing associations but there is only one guaranteeing organization per country. Therefore, it does not matter if the guaranteeing organization is not the one that issued the ATA Carnet.

  • Holder’s name: Only the holder’s name should be mentioned. It is not necessary to give the holder’s full details (address, etc.).

  • The same applies to the representative’s details, if applicable.

  • Issue date: it is the first day of validity of the ATA Carnet, not the date of entry of the goods in Mexico. This date is mentioned in box I of the green front cover of the ATA Carnet.

  • Expiry date: it is the last day of validity of the ATA Carnet, not the date of exit of the goods from Mexico. This date is mentioned in box G, section c) of the green front cover of the ATA Carnet.

  • General description of the goods: put only the general description of the items. DO NOT ENUMERATE them.

  • Total number of goods: put the total number of items indicated in the General List. Even if all the goods are not imported at the same time, the total number of items should still be mentioned.

  • Total value of goods: put the total value of the goods as it appears in the General List, even in case of partial importation.

  • If the goods are imported via cargo, it is important to stress that it is the Mexican customs broker that will complete the form. In this case, the penultimate field of the Prior Notification form should mention ‘not applicable’.

  • If the goods enter Mexico by hand carry, the email of the Holder/Representative should be mentioned in the last field of the form.

DUPLICATE CARNET (same general list and expiry date as the original Carnet).

If an ATA Carnet gets lost, destroyed, or stolen during its stay in Mexico, the Carnet Holder having obtained a duplicate Carnet must notify CANACO by sending a copy of the duplicate ATA Carnet via email to: This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.. NOTE: it is NOT necessary to complete the Prior Notification form for Duplicate Carnets.
